Beginning Quilting -



Twila Richter will teach this hands-on class for beginning quilters, in which participants will make a lap size Log Cabin quilt in your choice of colors and fabrics.  Twila has been involved with pretty fabrics and shiny threads since she was three years old. For the last 25 years, she has been teaching Beginning Quilting along with other Needle and Fiber Arts.

Class Sessions: This class meets 4 Saturdays: March 2, 9, 16, 23 from 10:00 am-1:00 pm. April 6th will be reserved in the event a make-up class is needed.

Class Objectives


At the end of the last session of class, you will be able to:
     - Safely and accurately rotary cut strips of fabric
     - Calibrate your sewing machine for 1/4" seams
     - Strip sew and press, "manufacturing" style
     - Press seams for easier "locking" together assembly
     - Audition and arrange block layouts by seeing them on a design board
     - Easily safety-pin baste quilt layers together for free-motion quilting
     - Mark your quilt designs with different quilting tools/techniques
     - Machine bind with no visible joints or lumps and with mitered corners

* During the first class, you will explore the shop with Twila as she guides you in your choice of fabrics for this project. You will receive a 10% discount on the purchase of fabrics and tools for the class.

The quilt you make measures 38 1/2" by 50 1/2", a crib or lap size quilt.

Class Supplies - All are available for purchase at City Blocks Quilt Shop.  We do not sell sewing machines.  

 - A “cleaned” sewing machine, in good working order, with a NEW needle  (There are two sewing machines available to use for class.  Please contact the shop ahead of time to reserve one.)

-  “Normal” sewing supplies, i.e. thread, scissors, straight pins, small brass safety pins (200-300) and any tool to close the safety pins

-  A rotary cutter, ruler and mat (Mats are available for use while at the shop.)

-  ¼ yard of focus fabric

-  ¼ yard of first light (or medium)

-  ¼ yard of second light (or medium)

-  ¼ yard of first medium (or dark)

-  ¼ yard of second medium (or dark)

-  ¼ yard of “kicker” for inner border

-  1 yard for outer border (if using a border print for both the focus and outer border, 1 ½ yards will work)

-  ½ yard for binding

-  1 5/8 yard for backing

-  Crib sized batting, cotton suggested

-  A treat to share. (Chocolate would be nice :- )

 There will be time in the first class to select fabrics.

Skill Level: Beginner
Skill Details: Please know how to use your machine - wind bobbins, thread the needle and bobbin case, and sew with a straight stitch.
Requirements: Sewing machine that has been tuned up and is in good working order.
